Medical Education in China Study in China
Medical training in China usually lasts five years, preceded by a one-year internship (or clinical placement, where students are actively involved in patient care). Clinical specialization usually involves two to three years of postgraduate training. Admission to training programs is based on national entrance examinations used by all Medical Universities in China. There are 45 universities in China teaching in English and accepting international medical students for admission in 2016/2017.
The degree awarded is called Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).

The Faculty of Medicine of Wuhan University was established in 1923 and consists of five faculties, six research centers and three first-level hospitals. It has 5080 beds, 15 million outpatients per year, 50 000 hospital patients per year, 25 000 major surgeries, and a complete list of specialties, including 100 clinical and support departments and 30 laboratories.
Its professional staff is an impressive 2,500 employees, including 1,125 professors, doctors, associate professors, and assistant directors. The faculty currently has over 5,100 students, of which 3,000 are undergraduate students, 1,500 postgraduate students, and 600 international students. Through academic exchanges, the School maintains good relations and collaborates with hospitals and institutions in America, the UK, France, Germany, Finland, and Japan, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Clinical Medicine (MBBS) is primarily designed to equip international students with an understanding of the structure and function of the human body, human behavior and normal mental states, the causes of common diseases and disorders, including mental illness, how environmental, social, behavioral and psychological factors influence the onset and development of disease, and the role of disease prevention, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations,
Program description
The program consists of three parts:
(1) Chinese culture and science courses. In order to facilitate international students’ study and life in China, and to facilitate communication with patients in their medical practice, a Chinese language course is compulsory for them throughout their medical studies in English.
(2) Basic medical studies, behavioral sciences, humanities, and social sciences, as well as medical ethics, preventive medicine, and clinical medicine. These subjects are also subject to compulsory examinations.
(3) Internship. The departments shall carefully make appropriate arrangements for internships. The internship lasts for one year (minimum 48 weeks).
WHU is recognized by WHO and students of the MBBS program can participate in medical licensing examinations organized by medical boards of different countries such as USMLE, PLAB, AMC, MCI, PMDC, HPCSA, SCHS, etc.
Internships
The internship is carried out during the sixth year (minimum 48 weeks). Students can choose to do their internship in China, in their home country or in another country. The tuition fee remains at RMB 40,000 per year for the duration of the internship.

Clinical Medicine (MBBS)
Objectives:
The goal of the program is to prepare highly qualified physicians at the undergraduate level and to ensure that, upon completion of their training, they can practice medicine effectively and safely under the supervision of senior physicians and that they have a solid foundation for continued lifelong learning and research in a specific field of medicine.
Program Description:
The Tongji School of Medicine of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was founded in 1907. Before merging with HUST, it was a centralized medical university and was directly subordinated to the Ministry of Health. The overall level of teaching and research is among the best medical universities in China.
Tongji Medical College is affiliated with five Tri-A hospitals with a total of 5,400 beds, of which Tongji Hospital and Union Hospital are the best hospitals in China. With a complete medical department, strong technical equipment, advanced diagnostic equipment, and rich clinical experience, it is a standardized clinical teaching hospital in China and a diagnostic and treatment center in central China.
The MBBS program lasts 6 years and is conducted in 5 semesters:
1st year: pre-medical training with English language training.
2nd year: theoretical training with teaching in English.
3-4. Year 2: Basic and clinical medical research with bilingual education in English and Chinese.
Year 5: Medical research and clinical practice with training in Chinese
Year 6: Internship in a hospital with Chinese education.
Majors:
Human anatomy, histology, and embryology, medical microbiology, surgery, internal medicine, medical immunology, biochemistry, physiology, pathophysiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.
Notes: The MBBS program is structured as above to improve student’s language skills in communicating with patients and prepare them for clinical practice in China. All textbooks, exams, and assignments are in English.
Length of study: 6 years (including 1-year internship).
Tuition: 40,000 RMB/year.
