POORVA KARMA
Theprincipal goalofsnehanaorswedana is tobringdoshas that are vitiated to an eliminationform. Itcan be usedas an individual therapyas well as apoorvakarmafor the ShodhanChikitsa.
SNEHANA
It’s also knownasOleation Therapy.It is aprocedures that are performed prior tobeginning the Panchakarma therapy.According toCharaka Samhita there are mainlyfour kinds of snehana dravyaconsidered the best for snehan.
1) Ghee (ghrita)
2) Oil (taila)
3) Fat (vasa)
4) Bonemarrow(majja)
Dadimadighrita, tilataila the bala tailaGhrita, etc are a few ofthemedicines usedinthe snehana.
Theprocess lubricates the entirebodythrough the application of medicated oil or gheeinternally and externally.When the medicated oil or ghee isadministered internally it is calledthe snehapanam. It’s animportant for the Panchakarma process.
CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1.) Internal oleation
Itincludes consumption ofthe snehana Dravya in a medicalorunmedicated form. Itmay or may notbecombinedwith other ayurvedicmedications or food items.This method helps to lubricate thetissuesas well as various areas of thehuman body.
2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga
Itincludes head massages and body massage, as well asgargle etc with medicated oil.
SWEDANA
It’s also known assteam therapy, also known astherapeutic sudation. It isthe second procedure performed beforePanchakarma.The therapy improvescirculation of blood and removestoxins through the skin poresin the body.
It isone ofthemost effective methods that havebeenused for many yearsback. Itis used as athe shaman Chikitsa as well asfor poorvakarma prior to shodhan chikitsa. PRADHAN KARMA OR SHODHAN CHIKITSA
1) VAMANA
It is acontrolled therapeuticvomiting. Vamana therapyis indicated inthe kapha doshas.When the dosha crossessome limit and istransferred to another location that it mustbeeliminatedcompletely from ourbody. Kapharesidesin the chestregion , thereforeremoval viaan oral pathwayisstraightforward.
HERBA USED AS VAMAK DRAVYA

Therapeutic emesis is of 2types:

Vomiting is coordinated byThe brain’s medulla oblongataandstarts with lot ofnausea and salivation.

HERBS USED AS VAMAK DRAVYA
Vamana therapywhen aggravatedthe kapha dosha that causes disease,orwhen dominant kapha dosha alongpitta dosha is responsible fordiseases.The therapy has certainwarnings and contraindications.
INDICATIONS-
Thetherapy is suggested indiarrhea and dysentery as well as feverfrom recent causes such as cold, coughasthma, tumour,urinary tractdisorders Anorexia, skin diseases, respiratory disorder, indigestionfibroid, goiter, filariasisetc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS-
Patientswith kapha dosha belownormalshould not undergovammanatherapy.Women who are pregnant, with noany snehana or karma, with a strong ag(digestive system) or someone who isstressed, hungry and children, elderly, weak person, enlargedspleen, intestinal parasites,enlarged prostate and etcin such cases vamana karmashould be avoided.
2) VIRECHAN
Virechan (purgation)is the second form of karmainpanchakarma. It isa widelyused therapy, especially inconditions caused by anaggravation of pitta dosha. The pittadosha is eliminatedforcibly through the anal route.The doshas get eliminated withless strain and with less complications whencompared to vamana karma. Itmay also be administeredinpitta-kapha and vata-pittadoshas where pitta dominates. Thetreatment requires adherence to a specificfood regimens in order to achievenormaleating habits and finishthetreatment.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Depending on the medicine used,virechan may be of two kindsThere are two types of virechan –
1.) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofthe word “snigdha” isoily. It isa reference to pitta when itisin connection withvata dosha.
2.) Rooksha virechan- itis indicated when pitta isassociated with kapha dosha.
INDICATIONS
Virechanmay causeconstipation, gout, piles as well as jaundice, liver disease ascites, splenomegalydysuria, pain or discomfort in the largeintestine, disease of urogenitalsystem infemales and males nasal bleeding, etc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
A poor digestive system, diarrhea and dysentery as well as ulcersin the rectum, emaciatedperson, following excessiveOleation treatment, or wounds, etc.arethe cases wherevirechanis not indicated.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inearlier times,theurinarybladder (basti) wasused asequipmenttoenema.The name for thisprocedure is given basti karma.
Basti isa particular treatmentwithinayurvedic panchakarma.The medicated ghee,decoctions, oils, etc.are administeredthrough the rectal,vaginal, and urinary route. Itenhances immunity and promotesoverall health of an individual. Vatadosha is the cause ofall the diseasesand basti karmais the treatmentof choice for pacifyingvata dosha.Therefore, it is describedas ‘ardhachikitsa’ .

Theadministration of medicine usingthe basti, or even vasti(urinary bladder) iscalled basti karma.
One or more of theherbal decoctions, medicated oil-gheeor similar, mamsarasa, raktaand othermedicines in the form ofliquid are applied depending onthemedical condition of theperson.

Jeevaka, rishabhaka, jeevanti, guduchi, gokshura, bala, draksha, shatavari, shatpushpa, yashtimadhu, amalaki, brihati, dadima,pippali, vidanga, adraka, musta, nimbi, kutaja etc are used for basti karma.
