POORVA KARMA
Theprimary goalthe main goal ofsnehanaorswedana is tobringdoshas in a vitiated state to an eliminationform. Itis usedto treat individualsand aspoorvakarmafrom the shodhanChikitsa.
SNEHANA
It is also referred toasoleation therapy.it is one of themethods that are used prior tostarting Panchakarma therapy.As mentioned inCharaka Samhita there are mainlyfour types of snehana daravyathought to be the best for snehan.
1) Ghee (ghrita)
2) Oil (taila)
3) Fat (vasa)
4) Bonemarrow(majja)
DadimadiGhrita, tila Taila, bala taila, ashwagandhaGhrita and others are amongthemedicines that are usedinsnehana.
Themethod lubricates the wholebodyby applying medicated oil/gheeboth externally and internally.When the medicated oil/ghee has beenused internally, it’s known assnehapanam, it is veryimportant procedure for Panchakarma.
CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1) Internal oleation
Itis a form of consumption that includessnehana dravya , whether in a medicinalornon-medicated version. Itcan or should notbemixedwith other ayurvedicmedications or food items.The technique lubricatestissuesand different parts ofhuman body.
2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga
Italso includes head massage, body massage,gargles and other treatments using medicated oils.
SWEDANA
It is also calledsteam therapyortherapeutic sudation, isthe other procedure done beforePanchakarma.The therapy improvesblood circulation and eliminates thecontaminants through the pores of the skinin the body.

PRADHAN KARMA OR SHODHAN CHIKITSA
1) VAMANA
It is atherapeutically controlledvomiting. Vamana therapyis recommended indoshas called kapha.When a dosha exceedsthe limit of a certain amount and getsmoved to other place and needs tobeeliminatedaway from yourbody. Kaphais locatedin the chestregion henceelimination viathe oral routeiseasy.

INDICATIONS-
Thetherapy is indicated indiarrhea and dysentery as well as feverof recent origin, cough, cold,asthma, tumour,urinary tractdisorder Anorexia, skin diseases breathing disorder, ingestiongoiter, fibroidand many more.
CONTRAINDICATIONS-
Patientswith a kapha dosha less thannormalshouldn’t undergovammanatreatment.Pregnant women, withoutthe karma of snehana, strong agni(digestive system) or someone who ishungry, in stress youngsters, older people or weak, with an enlargedspleen, intestinal parasites,larger prostate and othersin such cases vamana karmashould be avoided.
2) VIRECHAN
Virechan (purgation)can be described as the second of the karmainpanchakarma. It isone of the most widelyemployed therapies, with particular emphasis ondiseases caused due toaggravation of pitta dosha. The pittadosha is eliminatedforcibly through the anal route.The doshas are eliminated withless stress and complicationsas compared to vamana karma. Itcan also be usedinpitta kapha or vata pittadoshaswhere pitta is dominant. Thetherapy requires following a particulareating regimens to attain thenormaldiet and completethetreatment.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Based on the type of medicine that is administered,virechan is of 2 typesThe first is
1) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofthe word “snigdha” isoily. It isa reference to pitta when itislinked tovata dosha.
2) Rooksha virechan- itis a sign that pitta isassociated with kapha dosha.
INDICATIONS
Virechanis often associated withconstipation, gout, piles jaundice, liver diseases ascites, splenomegaly,dysuria, pain or discomfort in the largein the intestine, diseases of the urogenitalsystem infemales and males, nasal bleeding etc.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Poor digestive system, diarrhea and dysentery as well as ulcersin the rectum, an emaciatedpersonafter excessiveoleation treatment, wounds etcaresome of the situations wherevirechanshould not be used.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inolden daystheurinarybladder (basti) wasused asequipmentforthe enema.Thus the name for theprocedure is basti Karma.
Basti isan exclusive treatmentthat is used inayurvedic panchakarma.In this treatment, medicated gheeoil, decoction etcare administeredthrough the rectal,vaginal and urinary channels.
